He married Susan Christine Bonander 16 November 1968. Jim received a BA in Chemistry from Occidental College in Los Angeles in 1964; a secondary teaching credential from Occidental in 1965; and an MS in Biology from San Diego State University in 1974. He has served as a chemist, high school science teacher, Naval officer, plant ecologist and soil scientist.
