He married Geraldine Virginia Mann 29 Jun 1952 Hancock, Washington Co, MD. Geraldine was born 1934 Hancock, Washington Co, MD. John earned a PhD in horticulture from the University of Maryland. After several university jobs, in 1963 he became Director of the Fairchild Tropical Garden near Miami, Florida and continued in that capacity until his retirement in 1991. Now living in Hancock, MD he is continuing with plant research, growing fruit, and assisting the Wilderness Society, and is a member of the local Planning Board.
