After Marion's husband was killed in combat in a helicopter crash in Vietnam, she obtained a PhD in Archeology from the University of California at Berkeley, then returned to Guatemala where she lives in and manages Casa Popenoe in Antigua. She is head of the Department of Archeology at the University of the Valley in Guatemala City.

For six years she taught French at a community college in the Imperial Valley of California, later worked in a bookshop in Julian, CA, and is now Director of the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, CA..
