Minthorn/Minturn Families of Orange County, NY

Nathaniel Bailey of Rye, grandson of Judge Nicholas Bailey of Westchester Town, wrote his will in 1740, mentioning his daughter Abigail, widow of John Minthorn.[1]  We don’t know anything about this John Minthorn but he could have been living in the Philipse Upper Patent and not have appeared on the tax lists since he was dead before 1740.  Four of Abigail’s Bailey’s brothers moved up to that area.  According to one author, Nathaniel took up lands in North Salem and may have moved to the Oblong in South East when it was opened for settlement in 1730.[2]  The tax lists show a Nathaniel in the Southern Precinct in 1753 and in Fredericksburgh 1763-79; Nehemiah is shown in the Southern Precinct 1740-41; and Nathan in Fredericksburgh 1773.[3]  Levi bought a farm just across the county border in Croton Falls, Somers, Westchester County, in 1769 when the land was first sold, but was probably living there earlier.[4]  It is not unreasonable to believe that Abigail Bailey met John Minthorn somewhere around there.

We know that Abigail and John Minthorn had three children—Nathaniel, John and Abigail Minthorn—who moved on to Orange County.

Abigail Bailey’s sister, Jane Bailey Harker and her husband Joseph Harker, also moved to Orange County.  When Joseph Harker wrote his will in 1756, his witnesses (all in Florida/Warwick) were John Minthorn, son of Abigail Bailey, Richard Edsall whose brother John married John Minthorn’s sister Abigail, and Richard Johnson, married to Sarah Poppino, sister of John Minthorn’s wife.  Richard Edsall was Executor[5]

Some evidence suggests that John may have descended from Richard Minthorne of Long Island.[6]  But he might also have been a son or grandson of the first Philip Minthorne (who was associated with Judge Nicholas Bailey) who never got into the records.

1  Nathaniel Minthorn, 13 Jan 1735 in NY – ca 1822 in Warwick, m 15 Jan 1754 Hannah Grant 10 Apr 1740 - 1822.  Nathaniel was a Lt. in the Orange County militia in 1762 during the French and Indian War[7] and a private during the Revolution.  (His will Liber G, p 43, made 5 Jun 1818, probated 27 Sep 1822, named wife Hannah but not children.)  His 83-acre farm adjoined that of his brother John Minthorn and lands of Samuel Baird and William Wisner.[8]  He also had some 300 acres of mountain land around Bellvale of which he sold off pieces at various times.   Possible children:[9]

          19   Amy Minthorn, 25 Sep 1783

2  Abigail Minthorn of Bellvale m 25 May 1756 in Florida John Edsall,[21].  John, bap 25 Nov 1733, son of Richard and Hillegonde DeKay, lived in Warwick next to his brother Samuel with whom he operated a grist mill.[22]   Said to have three children.

21   Hannah Edsall, b 11 Apr 1776, Orange County; d 23 Dec 1801 Newton, Sussex County, NJ.  She m William Coe, b 23 Mar 1764 Torringford, Litchfield County, CT, d 29 Dec 1809, Lunenburg County, VA.[23]

3   John Minthorn, ca 1738[24] - < 1790, m Christian Poppino.[25]  In 1762, John Minthorn was one of a group of men from the Florida and Warwick Presbyterian Churches who signed a bond agreeing to pay Samuel Parkhurst as minister of their churches.[26]  Parkhurst died in 1768: around 1766, John Minthorn named a son Samuel Parkhurst Minthorn.[27]

John was commissioned 19 Feb 1778 as an officer in Col. John Hathorn’s Warwick regiment of the Orange County Militia and is often referred to as Captain Minthorn.  After the war he was promoted to Major.[28]   John was a member of the Committee of Safety and Observation of Goshen Precinct and served at one time as its chairman.[29]  His farm was next to the farm of his brother, Nathaniel Minthorn.  In 1785 he mortgaged to Samuel Johnson (son of Richard Johnson who was married to Christian Minthorn’s sister) a small piece of land adjoining lands of Daniel Burt and Francis Baird.[30]

John is said to be buried in an unmarked grave.  Christian Poppino Minthorn has a tombstone which was moved to the Warwick Cemetery in the 19th century and reads:  “In memory of Christian, wife of John Minturn, who died May 23, 1828 in her 81st year.”  That gives her a birth date of ca 1747.

Christian Minthorn was head of family in the 1790 census.  The family consisted of 2 males over 16, 2 under 16, and 3 females.  Thus we should be looking for at least 4 boys and 2 girls.  The 1800 Census for Orange County showed three Nathaniels, one of which had a woman over 46 in the family.  This was probably Christian's eldest son and that woman was Christian

The probable children of John Minthorn and Christian Poppino are:  John Minthorn, b <1764 Joseph Minthorn, b 1764, Samuel Parkhurst Minthorn, b 1766, Nathaniel Minthorn, b 1768, William Minthorn, b 1771, Christian Minthorn, b 1774, James M. Minthorn, b 1780, Patty Minthorn.

31  John Minthorn, m Susanna Rogers.  There is a John Minthorn in the 1790 – 1820 censuses who was older than the John who was the son of Joseph Minthorn.  So he would appear to be a son of John and Christian, having one son and six or more daughters. In the 1810 census he is shown as 26-45 which would make him born by 1765. He was probably the first son of John and Christian, both because he was named for his father or grandfather and because his service in the militia during the Revolutionary War indicates that he could not have been born after about 1765.[31]  In 1798, John Minthorn and Susanna, his wife, mortgaged 29½ acres which they had purchased from Garrett Post, adjacent to the land of John Sayre on the south side of the road from Major Poppino’s to Warwick.[32]  In 1807 the children and heirs of Augustine Rogers sold his 172 acre farm in Warwick which they had inherited at his death.  They included John and Susanna and Nancy Rogers Roe, widow of Joseph Roe who died the year before and was the son of Joseph Roe, b 1755,  and Mary DeKay.[33]  Once again we have to make guesses about their children.  We’re calling their son x because we know he existed but we don’t know anything about him. We’ve assigned them a girl who got married with no record of her parentage, since we do have some record of daughters of John Minthorn’s siblings.

311  Lucy Minthorn, b say 1786, m 4 Jan 1806 Willliam Berliene (Berlin?).[34] In 1810, William Burline was in Minisink, age 26-45, with a female of the same age range and two girls under 10.

312  X Minthorn (male) b ca 1795-99.[35]  This man does not appear in the censuses after 1820.  He may have died before 1830, leaving a son, John, who also does not appear in the censuses but was probably living in another family.

3121  John H. Minthorn, b  27 Feb 1821, d 21 Nov 1851, Chemung County, NY, buried in 2nd Street Cemetery, Elmira, m Emaline (Emma) A. Elliott, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Elliott.[36]                                                      Children:[37]

                                    31211  Ann A. Minthorn, b ca 1840

                                    31212  Joseph D. Minthorn, b ca 1842

31213  Elizabeth Minthorn, b ca 1844.  In 1860 she was a domestic in the household of Joseph Rodburn, merchant, in Horseheads, Chemung, NY.

31214  John Henry Minturn, b 22 Jan 1851, Chemung County, NY, d 23 Feb 1923, Horseheads, Chemung,  m ca 1883 Martha Atwood, Oct 1855 - 13 Jun 1929, daughter of  Thomas Atwood and Bessie Youmans.[38] Children:   Mary Belle (m -- Clark) b Apr 1884, Bettie D. (m --Harrower) b Nov 1886, Helen L. Minturn b ca 1904.[39]  In 1860, Henry was living with an aunt, Elizabeth Elliott and her husband Joseph Holcomb in Caton, Steuben  County (near the Chemung border) suggesting that his mother, Emaline was dead by that time.

32.  Joseph Minthorn 30 Apr 1764 – 30 Aug 1847[40].  m Sarah Ann Bradner, 20 Jun 1773 - 12 Jan 1840 (tombstone: 66/6/22)[41]  Joseph lived in a small house on a 118 acre farm north of the Ackerman farm on the corner of Ackerman Road and  the Florida-Warwick road.[42]  An unusually harsh winter in 1835 caused animals to freeze in the barns and the family to huddle in one room to keep warm.  Joseph’s health declined from the strains and he became bedridden.  In 1839 he conveyed his property to his two sons in exchange for their agreement to take care of he and Sally for the rest of their lives.  In addition, the sons each paid $1,500, which was divided among the three daughters.[43]  Children:[44]

321   John Minturn b 23 Jun 1792, d 30 Sep 1861, m Sarah Elizabeth Keene, 2 Dec 1791 – 2 Apr 1871.  The 1820 census shows him in Warwick with 2 boys and 1 girl; the 1850 census shows John and Sarah with one son, James,  and a ten year old Armstrong girl.  In 1855 John and Sarah Minthorn were living  with Thomas and Sarah Taylor. Their grandson, Joseph F. Minturn was living  with them in 1860.  The 1865 will of Sarah Minthorn left most of her estate to  her sister, Abby Adeline Poppino, wife of Lewis Poppino.  In 1870 she was living  with Adeline Poppino.

33   Samuel Parkhurst Minthorn was born ca 1766 and died at 68, 16 December 1834 in Lansing, Tompkins County, NY.[77]  He married Catherine Howell.[78]  Catherine was also born about 1766 and died at 63 on 8 May 1829.[79] In the 1790 census, Minthorn is six persons away from David Howell.   He is also fairly close to John Minthorn, his probable brother.  According to one family record, his father was Moreck Howell, a sea captain from Orange County.  I have not, however, found any other record of such a person. [80]

Some members of the Minthorn family changed the spelling of their names to Minturn at various times in the 19th century.  In general, Samuel and his children are listed as Minthorn in the censuses up through 1810 and Minturn after that.  Some changed the name further to Minton.

After the war, the area west of Orange County was opened to settlement, much of it as bounty land.  Chemung County (which then included Tioga) was established in 1788 and Lt. Col. Henry Wisner from Warwick laid out the town of Newtown, which was renamed  Elmira in 1828.  A number of people from Warwick moved up there or speculated in land, and Samuel Minthorn was living in Tioga in 1800.[81]  By 1810, he had moved  north to Genoa in Cayuga County.[82]  By 1820, the southern part of Genoa became Lansing in Tompkins County and it was here he died in 1834.[83] Samuel and Catherine had four boys:  John, William, James, and Samuel, and five girls:   Jane, Laura, Eliza, Maria and Helen.  All of these, except Jane who died earlier, can be identified through a land transaction in 1868 in which Laura, for $1, received a parcel of land in Lansingville from the others, probably a property that had belonged to the first Samuel.[84]

            331.  John Minturn, b ca 1790, d > 1880, married Elizabeth Kelly (or Kelsey), b ca  1792, d >1860.[85]  John first shows up in Elmira in 1810, age 16-26, with one male 10- 16, probably too old to be his child.[86]  In 1820 and 1830 he is in Genoa, Cayuga County, where his father was listed in 1810.[87] In 1850 and 1860 he is in Ithaca, Tompkins County, occupation mason.  In 1870 he is living with his son Frank in Ithaca and in 1880, still in Ithaca, he is living with his daughter Ann Cameron.  At this time he is shown to be 94, which would give him a birth date of 1786, however most of the other census entries suggest a birth date of 1789 or early 1790.[88]  Probable children:

                        3311.  Henry E. Minton, b ca 1811, d ca 1855, mason in Ithaca, m Amelia, b ca 1811. [89]

33111.  William E. Minton, b ca 1837.  He was in the family of Henry Minturn in 1850 but a deed in 1855 said Eliza was the only child of  Henry, so he might be a son of one of Henry’s brothers or he might have died before 1855.[90]  In 1860, William Minturn, b ca 1839, mason, was with Elizabeth, 17, in Ithaca.  Not found later.[91]

            332.  William Weisner (Wisner) Minthorn/Minturn,[105] b 1 Sep 1791 in Warwick, Orange County, d 27 Mar 1872 in Gallipolis, Gallia County, Ohio.  He married 16 Jun  1816 Tirzah Tullar (or Tirzah Fellows, daughter of Willis Fellows and Sarah Hart), b 18 Jul 1799 in Shelburne, Franklin, MA.[106]

The Wisner family was very prominent in Warwick and had various associations with the Minthorns and their relatives.  This boy may have been named for William Wisner who  died in 1803, son of Captain John Wisner, Sr. and brother of Lt. Col. Henry Wisner who,  as mentioned in a prior footnote, laid out and owned much of Elmira.[107]

Sometime before 1820, William, perhaps with his brother James and sister Maria, moved down to Point Pleasant, Mason County, VA.  This was the site of the famous Battle of  Point Pleasant in 1774 during Lord Dunmore’s War, which preceded the Revolution.  It is just across the Ohio River from Gallipolis which was originally created to attract refugees  from the French Revolution and the Minturns lived in both places.  In the early 1800s both communities were small, with good farmlands.  The Minturns stayed in the area for a long time and today there is still in Point Pleasant a Masonic lodge called Minturn #19 of which William W. Minturn was first master in 1858.  William signed a will on 14 Jan 1868, probated 23 Apr 1872, and was buried in Mar 1872 in Pioneer Cemetery, Point  Pleasant.[108]

1857, when he came to St. Joseph, MO., where he worked at his occupation twelve years.  In 1869 he removed to amazonia, and bought the Junction Mill property, but lost it in 1876, since which time he has superintended the mill.  On April 7, 1842, he was united in marriage with Miss Catherine Knopp, of Mason County, West Virigina.  Nine children have been born to them..two sons and seven daughters...of whom two daughters are dead.  In January, 1884, he was ordained deacon of the Episcopal Church by Rt.
