September 2005 The Minthorn/Minturn Families I first got interested in the Minthorns/Minturns of Warwick, Orange County because Christian Poppino, daughter of John Poppino, the patriarch of that family in Orange County, married Capt. John Minthorn, a leader during the Revolution. As I delved deeper, particularly in searching for John Minthorn’s antecedents, I became ever more aware of how much wrong information is out there and how easily it gets propagated through the Internet. Much of it seems to go back to DAR applications of a century ago when the good ladies would grasp at any straw to get into that august organization. In posting this fairly detailed four-part essay on my Website I hope to help others correct their errors and to engender responses from anyone who can correct my errors. This paper is divided into four parts: III. The Minthorns of Long Island and Westchester County IV, The Orange County Minthorns/Minturns who may have come earlier from Long Island or may have descended from Philip Minthorne of New York. People in each section are separately numbered and the numbers are only to lend clarity to their relationships. I do not deal with the Minthorns who started in Hartford, CT and from whom Herbert Hoover descended; nor the Morris County, NJ Minthorns who very likely came from Long Island and may have been related to those of Orange County, though no one has yet delineated or proved it.
