The
Roe Family[1] The immigrant ancestor was David Roe, an early settler in Flushing, Long Island, where he is mentioned in the tax list of 1675. He was a carpenter and farmer, one of the well-to-do residents, owning lands, farm stock, carpenters’ tools and two slaves. His will was proved in 1707. His children were Elizabeth, John (who moved to Cohansy, Cumberland Co, NJ), Mary, and Nathaniel. Nathaniel Roe, b ca 1670, inherited all his father’s lands in Flushing and probably added to them by purchase. He d in Flushing before 2 Aug 1738 when his will was proved. His children were probably all by his first wife, Elizabeth: David, Nathaniel (II), William who moved to Fishkill, Dutchess Co, John who moved to NJ, and Benjamin who also moved to Fishkill. We will only follow David briefly and then Nathaniel II’s line in greater detail. Nathaniel (I) m2 Mercy Price, a widow, and after his death she m 1754 Edmund Concklin, a widower of Ulster Co, NY. 1 David Roe, who stayed in Flushing, m Deborah --- who is mentioned in his will, proved 1767. He is called gentleman in this will, indicating that he was a man of wealth and prominence. Children b in Flushing: 11 Ezekiel Roe 1719-, m Mary Fowler 12 William Roe, b ca 1722, m Martha --- 13 David Roe, b ca 1725, m1 --- Lawrence, m2 Sarah Phillips 14 John Roe, b ca 1727, m Grietje Stryt. He resided in Goshen Township, Orange Co for many years and died after 15 April 1794. Among his children were: 141 Susannah Roe, b 1760, who m Daniel Conkling. 142 Elizabeth Roe, b 1763, m Benjamin Drake. This was probably the Benjamin Drake, b 1737, who was a nephew of Martha Drake who m Alexander Jackson, therefore a cousin of Anna Jackson who m John . 143 William Roe, m Elizabeth Allison, dau of John Allison. After William died, she m --- Smith. Her brother, John Wisner Allison, named Richard Poppino one of his executors in his will of 3 Mar 1806 144 David Roe, 14 May 1784 - 29 Oct 1859, m ca 1803 Clarissa Carpenter, 7 Oct 1785 - 29 Jan 1873, daughter of Jesse Carpenter and Sarah Seely. Sarah Seely, b 20 Oct 1762, was the daughter of Bazaleel Seely (Jonas, Ebenezer, Jonas, Obadiah) and Zerviah Satterly. The Roes lived in Chester throughout their lives. 145 Joshua Roe, m 1795 Hannah Vail. They lived in Orange Co. 146 Richard Roe. Was in 1800 Census in Goshen Township. 15 Abigail Roe, b ca 1730, d ca 1826, m Joseph Haviland. 16 Susanna Roe, 1733-1813, m ca 1752 her cousin, Nathaniel Roe of Chester. 2 Nathaniel (II) Roe ca 1702-1785. He married Mary --- about 1725 and moved to Orange County where he purchased land on 11 May 1731 from a Flushing man. This was in the area between Florida and Edenville, in the neighborhood of the Poppinos, Carrs, Armstrongs and Johnsons. This property passed to his son Jonas, and most of Jonas’ descendants, including his son and grandson named Nathaniel continued to live in this Florida area. On 6 June 1731 Nathaniel (II) purchased another tract in Goshen township, now Chester, which became the property of his son Nathaniel. His line of Nathaniels are associated with Chester. Children: 21 Jonas Roe ca 1727-1798. He m ca 1750 Phebe ---. According to Raymond Myers, she could have been the daughter of Caleb and Phebe Smith of Goshen or of Simon Rumsey and his wife, Phebe. According to Elmire Conklin she could have been Phebe Allison, dau of old Joseph Allison. Jonas (along with Jonas, Jr, Nathaniel [his son?) and Timothy Roe, all served in the Fourth Regiment of the Orange County Militia during the Revolution.[2] The 1790 Census shows Jonas with four slaves (a relatively rich man in Orange County) living close to his sons Nathaniel and Benjamin and in between the Johnsons and David Lawrence. That would place them at the southeast of this Poppino/Carr/Armstrong neighborhood. In his will (Liber B, pp 16-18) Jonas left to Nathaniel 3/4 of the land lying on the west side of the road from Florida to Warwick, adjoining the south side of Nathaniel’s land. (That would be Long Ridge Road.) He left his house to George. Children: 211 Nathaniel (III) Roe, b 5 May 1751, m1 12 Feb 1772 Bathsheba Dunning, dau of Jacob Dunning (Bathsheba’s bro John m Mary Seely, granddaughter of Samuel Seely), and m2 22 Oct 1799 Mary l’Hommedieu. Church, Mary Adams, b in NJ ca 1810. She d prior to 1844. He m2 Catherine Sly 17 Mar 1893, daughter of Jacob Sly of Warwick. In the 1850 Census William’s real estate was valued at $14,000--one of the higher figures in Warwick. Children by Mary Adams: 211211 Nathaniel (V) Roe 1 May 1832-12 July 1899, m1 25 May 1855[4] Sarah K Poppino b ca 1832 d before 1880; m2 her sister Mary E Poppino ca. 1841-12 Jun 1909. They lived in Wantage and the 1850 Census shows that her father, Nathaniel Roe was living with them. However the 1860 Census shows that he was back in Warwick with his grandson Nathaniel. 2113 Jacob Dunning Roe, b 1777, ml Peggy Joline. (She might have been the daughter of Rev. John Joline who was pastor of the Florida Presbyterian Church from 1795 until his death in 1802. His dau Hester Jane was m to William Poppino.) (In 1829 and 1835, John A Carr and his wife Bersheba Roe sold land on the Florida Edenville Road which adjoined John Roe’s land.). 2116 Mary Roe 1784-, d young. 2117 Margaret Roe 10 Apr 1787- 9 Feb 1861, m 1808 James Bradner. 2118 Joseph Roe, 26 Apr 1791-23 Jan 1864. M 1 Mar 1847 Ruth Dennison Strong, sister of Caroline Amelia above. They moved to Adams Co, IL. (There was an Austin Carr living in Newburgh in the 1830 and 1850 censuses. I would guess that he was the brother of Peniinah, thus son of one of the Florida Carrs.) 21219 James Roe, 1821-1832. 2121(10) Louisa Roe, b 1826, m Joseph Lemon. 2122 John Delansa Roe, m Mary Ann ---. He is not listed in the NY records however. He left all his land in Warwick to his two oldest sons, Thomas and Joseph as tenants in common. Children:[7] 2131 Thomas De Kay Roe, -d 2 Sep 1850, m Elizabeth Holmes from Elizabeth NJ.
