The Totten Family by Oliver Popenoe (I have a lot of changes to make on this family including the order of Joseph's children and listing William with many descendants as a probable son of Joseph, not Peter. Contact me if interested.) Generation One 1. Joseph1 Totten was born at Hempstead, Queens County, NY.1 He married Mary Poppino ( -say 1780), daughter of John Poppino (circa 1704-after 1780)" and Christian Mary Surname ukn. ( -after 1773)" He died in Apr 1800 at Florida, Orange Co, NY.2 We know that Joseph Totten was born in Hempstead, Nassau Co, NY because a pension letter from his son Levi said so. This implies that he was probably a descendant of Richard Totten of Hempstead. Richard is believed to have been born ca 1643-4, son of Edward Totten who came to New Netherland in 1642. Richard married ca 1662 Sarah Champion of Hempstead, who had been born in England, and she was the likely mother of all his children. He married Elizabeth Roe Tatum in 1697, dau of David Roe, the immigrant ancestor of the Roe family. Richard and Sarah had six sons and our Joseph, is believed to have been the son of Jasper who married Patience ---, and moved to Morristown, Morris Co, NJ, perhaps in the 1740s. Jasper died 10 Dec 1761 and named seven sons and a daughter in his will. On of the sons was Joseph who is believed to be our Joseph, although the only "evidence" of which I am aware is the fact that his son John married a girl from Morristown, suggesting a continuing connection there. Some of the Totten genealogies on the Internet (there are many) say that our Joseph married first Elizabeth Turner of Rye, NY. However she appears to have married Joseph, son of Peter and grandson of Richard, who had a shipyard in NYC. Our Joseph is said to have been born ca 1727 though I don't know what the evidence is. In any event, he ended up in Florida, Orange County, where he had a farm on the north side of John Poppino's farm near Union School House a couple of miles SW of Florida Village. In 1775 he was on the tax list next to John Poppino with property assessed at £3/8/3. Joseph was a farmer and tailor. He had land bounty rights for service in the 4th regiment (Warwick) of the Orange Co Militia during the Revolution. . [Other Tottens in that regiment were his son Levi, plus Jonas and James Totten who I do not recognize.] He was a member of the Florida Presbyterian Church and contributed to its land fund in 1793. On the 1799 tax list he was shown with house and farm valued at $975 and personal property of $104. In his will of 16 Apr 1800, probated 5 May, he left the farm, plus a lot in the Florida Cedar Swamp, to his son Silas, and Silas is shown in the 1801 tax list of Warwick with a farm worth $1000. He left to his sons Joseph and Peter a lot of land which he bought from [William] Wickham in "Carmelius Township." I have never found a place by that name and assume it was in Camillus Town, part of the Military Tract in Onondaga County. It would not appear that Joseph got any bounty land himself, but that he bought it as did many others in Orange County speculating in upper NY State bounty lands.3 Children of Joseph1 Totten and Mary Poppino were as follows: + 2. i. Lydia2:( -1812) married Richard Clark (9 Feb 1778-20 Sep 1865) on 4 Feb 1790 at the Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange, NY. + 3. ii. Mary ( -after 1830)" married David Miller before 1800. + 4. iii. JosephXE "Totten:was born on 5 Aug 1768 at Florida, Orange, NY. He married Mary Medaugh(6 Oct 1777-1835)" on 14 May 1796 at Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange, NY. + 11. x. John was born on 5 Aug 1770 at Florida, Orange, NY. He married Lydia Jack (23 Oct 1771-18 Mar 1848) daughter of John Jack and Esther Surname on 18 May 1793 at Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange, NY. Generation Two 2. Lydia2 Totten (Joseph1) married Richard Clark (9 Feb 1778-20 Sep 1865)" on 4 Feb 1790 at Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange, NY.6 She died in 1812 at Genesee, NY.7 Children of Lydia2 Totten and Richard Clark were: 12. i. Hiram3 8 was born on 27 Aug 1802 at Geneva, Ontario, NY.9 He died on 11 Nov 1886 at age 84.10 3. Mary2 Totten (Joseph1) married David Miller before 1800. She died after 1830. Children of Mary Totten and David Miller were as follows: 13. i. Elizabeth 11 married William Roe Wisner (21 Mar 1799-1886)12 She died in 1883.13 14. ii. Peter2 Totten (Joseph1)18 married Elizabeth Wood.19 He died in 1810 at Goshen, Orange, NY.20 Peter was a tailor. His wife Elizabeth was the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Wood, one of whose sons, Andrew, married Julia Poppino; another James, married Mary Armstrong, dau of William Armstrong Jr. and Sarah Johnson (whose mother Sarah was the sister of Peter's mother). After Elizabeth and Peter died, leaving 6 young orphans, their daughter Eliza (and maybe the other children) was raised by her grandmother, Elizabeth Wood, who in 1807 had married David Lawrence, widower of Elizabeth Poppino, Peter's first cousin. After Peter died his executors, David Miller and Daniel Jessup, put this ad in the paper:
Hamlet Totten's letter said he thought Peter had lived in Tioga (not certain whether NY or PA) and that he had met with a great grandson, William T., in the 1850s in Ridgeway, Elk Co, PA. He said that many of his relatives went west. William was still living in Elk in 1882. His father's and grandfather's names were William. All of Peter's children except William are mentioned in his will. Possibly Hamlet was mistaken about William as a son of Peter.21 Children of Peter2 Totten and Elizabeth Wood were as follows: 19. i. William3. 20. ii. Anna. 21. iii. Mariah. 22. iv. Jasper. 23. v. Spencer. 24. vi. Eliza was born on 17 Apr 1803 at Orange, NY.22 She married David N. Terhuen.23 She died on 22 Aug 1890 at Gatesville, Coryell, TX, at age 87. 25. vii. Arminda was born on 26 Nov 1807 at Orange Co, NY.24 She married Benoni Bradner Curry (7 Jun 1799-19 Jan 1875)", son of Benjamin Curry (before 1755- )" and Abigail Totten, on 23 Jan 1821 at Orange, NY.24 Arminda died on 9 May 1842 at Owego, Tioga, NY, at age 34.24 5. Silas2 Totten (Joseph1) married Elizabeth Surname ukn.25 He died in 1804.26 The 1800 Warwick Census showed Silas Totten with a family consisting of 1 M 16-26 (Silas), one M under 10 (Jasper?), one F 16-26 (Silas' wife) and 2 F under 10. When he died in 1804, administration was granted to his wife Elizabeth and his brother Joseph. He inherited his father's farm adjacent to that of the the late John Poppino and in an 1810 deed it was referred to as the lands of Joseph Totten deceased, suggesting that it may still have been in the family. Silas had two sons, John C and Jasper, who lived in Mt. Hope. Jasper died in 1874 in Newburgh; administration was granted to Elizabeth T. Edwards his only child. (Ltr. of Admin N29, 17 Dec 1874).27 Children of Silas2 Totten and Elizabeth Surname ukn were as follows: 26. i. Jasper3 28 died in 1874.29 27. ii. John C. 6. Abigail2 Totten (Joseph1)30 was born before 1755.31 She married Benjamin Curry before 1800. Children of Abigail2 Totten and Benjamin Curry were: 28. i. Benoni Bradner3 was born on 7 Jun 1799 at Sugar Loaf, Orange, NY.24 He married Arminda Totten, daughter of Peter Totten and Elizabeth Wood, on 23 Jan 1821 at Orange, NY.24 He died on 19 Jan 1875 at Pleasant Valley, NY, at age 75. 7. Levi2 Totten (Joseph1) was born on 2 May 1759 at Goshen Precinct, Orange, NY. He married Martha Tefft on 8 Jul 1789. He married Susanna C. Peckham on 11 Sep 1819.27 He died on 25 Feb 1833 at Warwick, Kent, RI, at age 73. We know more about Levi than his brothers because of a pension application giving his birth and military service. In 1776 he was a soldier in the army, serving more than 9 months in and around New York City, including the Battle of White Plains in October and afterward in Peekskill. The censuses show Levi in Rhode Island in 1810 and 1830 so he must have moved there before his first wife's death. In Rhode Island he became a Justice of the Peace, affixing the title Esq. after his name. However, when he applied for a pension in 1830, he claimed extreme indigence.32 Children of Levi2 Totten and Martha Tefft were as follows: 29. i. John Levi3 was born on 30 Jul 1790. 30. ii. Eliza33 was born on 26 Mar 1792.27 She married Robert Perry. She died on 13 Sep 1816 at age 24.27 31. iii. Henry Morris was born on 9 Mar 1794. Joseph2 Totten (Joseph1)39 was born on 5 Aug 1768 at Florida, Orange, NY.27 He married Mary Medaugh (6 Oct 1777-1835) on 14 May 1796 at Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange, NY.40 He died on 21 Mar 1852 at Canisteo, Steuben, NY, at age 83.27 Joseph was a tailor, like his father. His nephew, Hamlet Totten, wrote that when he was 10 or 12 years old, he visited his uncle Joseph in his shop and had dinner with him. All the children were born in Florida but after Mary's death in 1835, Joseph moved to Owego in Tioga County (also in PA and in Tompkins Co, NY) before moving in 1852 to Canisteo in Steuben Co, where he died.41 Children of Joseph2 Totten and Mary Medaugh all born at Florida, Orange, NY, were as follows: 41. i. Silas3 33 was born on 26 Sep 1797.27 He died in Nov 1847 at Owego, Tioga, NY, at age 50.27 42. ii. Hannah 33 was born on 12 Mar 1801.27 She died in 1868 at Canisteo, Steuben, NY.27 43. iii. William Jackson 33 was born on 26 Aug 1816.27 He died on 18 Feb 1895 at Ithaca, Tompkins, NY, at age 78.27 49. ix. John Falter 33 was born on 13 Mar 1819.27 11. John2 Totten (Joseph1)42 was born on 5 Aug 1770 at Florida, Orange, NY.43 He married Lydia Jack (23 Oct 1771-18 Mar 1848), daughter of John Jack and Esther Surname ukn, on 18 May 1793 at Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Orange, NY; Lydia was from Morristown, NJ, which helps to support the belief that John Totten's grandfather was Jasper Totten of Morristown and John had uncles there.44 He died on 13 Oct 1864 at prob. Cowanshannok Twp, Armstrong, PA, at age 94.43 John and Lydia remained in Orange County until they moved to PA in 1817. They are shown in the 1798 Tax Assessment records living in a rented house in Minisink, their son, Hamlet, said that he was born in Minisink, and John was listed as a member of the Westtown Presbyterian Church in Minisink on 4 May 1815. Hamlet said they moved to PA in October 1817 and the 1820 Census shows them in Unity Township, Westmoreland Co. In 1830 they were in Hempfield Township (perhaps created out of Unity) and in the mid 1830s they moved north to Cowanshannock Township, Armstrong County, PA. In the 1840 and 1850 Censuses John was living as a widower with his son Sidney.45 Children of John2 Totten and Lydia Jack were as follows: 50. i. John Harvey3 46 was born on 26 Mar 1794 at Orange, NY.47 He married Julia Knapp on 6 Jan 1815 in Orange Co., NY.47 He died on 21 Aug 1873 at Pendleton, Henry, KY, at age 79.47 As a young man, John Harvey learned the carpenter's trade. On 3 Nov 1812 he volunteered and served as a private in the U.S. Artillery Volunteers of NY for one year at Staten Island and Sandy Hook, and again for four months in 1814 in the NY Militia. After the war, John married 16-year old Julia and they lived with his parents for two years. When the parents moved to PA, John Harvey and Julia moved to Wheeling (now WV) where he was a carpenter for several years, than on to KY, to Madison, IN for a few years;, and back to KY where they died. Their children were Rozetta, Cornelius, William, Rachel and Augustus.47 51. ii. Mariah 42 was born circa Nov 1795 at Orange, NY.43 She married Thomas McColgin circa 1823; Thomas McColgin was born in Ireland and came to Pittsburgh PA about 1820 where he was a carpenter until his death before 1850. Their children were Almira, John T, Thomas DuBois, Caroline Adelia, Anne Maria and Lydia Angeline.43 She died in Mar 1873.43 52. iii. Joseph 42 was born on 20 Apr 1798 at Orange, NY.43 He died on 7 Jun 1810 at age 12.43 53. iv. Hester 42 was born on 10 Dec 1799 at Orange, NIY.43 She married David Corwin on 4 Oct 1817.43 She died on 30 Mar 1891 at age 91.43 At the beginning of the 19th century there were Corwins scattered around Orange County (particularly Middletown) and in Morris County where Hester's mother grew up; we have not identified David's parents among them. David and Hester stayed on in NY until about the mid 1830s, then moved to Pittsburgh. David died before 1850 because the Census shows Hester as head of family, which includes several apparent boarders. A clipping in Hamlet Totten's bible reported: "One of the most interesting events of today will be the celebration of the 91st birthday of the mother of D. P. Corwin, secretary of the Pittsburg, Virginia and Charleston railroad, and H. W. Corwin, connected with Totten's foundry...Mrs. Corwin was born December 10, 1799 in New York State, and was a Miss Hester Totten, when in 1817 she married David Corwin and subsequently settled in Pittsburg, where she has resided half a century. She is the mother of 10 children, nine of whom reached an adult age: John T., Stephen O., Ben Franklin, Henry W., D. P., Carrie A...Jane J...Sarah E...and Antoinette....She can recount anecdotes of the visit of Lafayette, of the War of 1812, in which her oldest brother, now a resident of Rural Valley, was enlisted, with animation, and correct her hearers as to the dates and names....One thing she displays a great interest and pride in, is a genealogy of the Corwin family in her possession, and one of the Totten family, now under way."43 54. v. Hamlet 42 was born on 27 Jan 1802 at Minisink, Orange, NY.43 He married Mary Craig on 11 May 1824. He married Jane Brown on 16 Jan 1868 at Congruity, Westmoreland, PA; Jane, whose parents were also from Ireland, was born 12 Apr 1808 in Washington Co, PA, moving with her parents to Westmoreland Co in 1828. She was first married to Mary Craig Totten's brother James Craig, who died in 1860.. They had six daughters. She died 4 Apr 1883.43 He died on 28 Feb 1891 at Rural Valley, Armstrong, PA, at age 89.43 We owe a lot to Hamlet for his bible and his 1884 letter about the family genealogy and a lengthy autobiographical sketch he wrote for the church, both reproduced in Sara Stewart's genealogy. He wrote that his religious experience began with the early instructions of a pious grandmother and when he was but eight years of age he lost two brothers, who were buried in one grave. He thought he had never passed a day or night without prayer since. In Oct 1817 the family moved to near Greensburg, Westmoreland Co, PA where they settled among Presbyterians and attended their church. He worked on the farm until Sep 1822, when he taught school for 6 months. He also began to teach Sunday school, was baptized in 1824 in the old Congruity Church and there met Mary Craig whom he married. They moved several times in the next few years. They moved to Elderton in 1830 where he taught school and opened a shoe shop; to Kitanning in 1833 where he again taught school and opened a temperance hotel and shoe shop until 1837 when they moved to Rural Valley. Hamlet was first elected an Elder of the church in Kitanning in 1834. In 1845 he was installed as Ruling Elder and Clerk of Session in the Rural Valley Presbyterian Church and he continued his activities throughout his life, attending 20 or more meetings of the ruling Presbytery or Synod in various parts of PA. He was elected twice as County Auditor in Armstrong County, serving six years, and was commissioned by the governor, Captain of a company of Artillery, serving one year. He was also appointed a Civil War Enrolling Master and in 1863, enrolled the township of Cowanshannok. Hamlet and Mary's children were John Craig Totten, born 25 August 1825, who was a music teacher and lived with Hamlet in 1884; and four daughters: Lydia Jane, Sarah Ann, Elizabeth Christy, and Mary Craig.43 55. vi. William Jack 42 was born on 15 Mar 1804 at Orange, NY.43 He married Eliza Christy (1811-7 Feb 1873)" in 1832. He died on 3 Apr 1850 at age 46.43 From the "History of Pittsburgh and Environs, American Historical Society, NY and Chicago, 1922: "The name Totten has been prominently identified with Pittsburgh, PA for nearly a century, William J. Totten, the founder of the family here, having come to the then village of Pittsburgh (then known as Fort Pitt) in 1823. He was succeeded after his death by his son, Robert D. Totten, of the law firm of Kay, Totten and Brown. William J. Totten was born in Orange County, NY, Mar 14, 1804, his parents being members of the sturdy, respectable farmer class, but of limited means. While William J. was still a boy, the parents moved to Westmoreland county, PA, and it was in the neighborhood schools here and in Orange county that the lad received the foundation of his education which, though meager in its beginning, was throughout the years of his life constantly added to and enriched until he came to be regarded, by associates competent to judge, as one of the best educated men in the city of Pittsburgh. About the year 1823 young Totten came to Pittsburgh and began his career in the humble, but respectable, capacity of a carpenter's apprentice. In his leisure hours, which were comparatively few, he took up the study of mechanical drawing, and with such industry, fidelity, and ability did he make use of his precious study time that he was shortly transferred to the pattern shop, and soon afterward entrusted with the supervision of that department in one of the largest manufacturing establishments in the city. Here, through repeated changes in ownership, he continued for more than twenty years the acknowledged head and director, finally becoming a partner in the business...the firm was engaged in the manufacture of an endless variety of articles for domestic use in the western and southwestern states, including the manufacture of engines to be used on land and water, in addition to the filling of the largest contracts ever filled in the West with the Federal Government for the making of cannon, for the construction of iron vessels for lake and ocean use, and for the making of special machinery....But even genius could not withstand the tide of financial ruin which swept the country during the panic of 1837-8, and the splendid business....failed in 1838....In 1842, obtaining a government contract for cannon through the good offices of Judge Wilkins, then Secretary of War, he formed a partnership with Charles Knapp and under the firm name of Knapp and Totten continued the business of manufacturing cannons and heavy machinery....Mr. Totten's relations with his workmen were the result of intelligent understanding and fair dealing. "Always interested in public affairs, both municipal and national, he gave strong and generous support to the cause of internal improvements, to the promotion of temperance, to the increase of popular education and to all benevolent institutions designed to better the conditions of the masses....He was for many years a consistent member of the old Second Presbyterian Church." William Jack and Eliza had eleven children: Robert Christy, Caroline, William D. H., Indiana Blanche, Ann, Josephine B, Sidney H, Harvey H, Lydia, Charles K, and Virginia S.43 56. vii. Julia AnnXE "Totten:Julia Ann (29 Mar 1806-3 Dec 1884)"42 was born on 29 Mar 1806 at Orange, NY.43 She married Benjamin K. LarimerXE "Larimer:Benjamin K." in Dec 1824 at Congruity, PA.43 She died on 3 Dec 1884 at Eldred Twp., Jefferson, PA, at age 78.43 57. viii. Caroline 42 was born in 1810 at Orange, NY.43 She married Jacob Linsenbigler. (1809-16 Mar 1873) 43 She died on 26 Nov 1862 at Rural Valley, Armstrong, PA.43 58. ix. Sidney 42 was born on 11 Feb 1814 at Orange, NY.43 He married Lydia Ann Black circa 1840.43 He died on 14 Mar 1876 at age 62.43 Sidney was an infant when the family moved to PA. He was still living with his parents when they moved to Armstrong County. As the youngest son he apparently took over the family farm since he was listed as head of family in the 1840 census, with an old couple included, and in the 1850 Census his family included wife and children and John Totten, 81. During the 1860s the family moved to West Virginia, probably after 1863 when it broke away from Virginia. After his death, his wife, Lydia lived at least until 1884. Their children were: William G L, James, Sarah A, Caroline, Maria, Evaline, Ellenor, Cavell, John W, and Arminda.47
