According to the censuses, James could not read or write. His father, Peter, could and James' illiteracy may be due to his father's having died when James was very young and his frontier upbringing. In early records the name contains a middle vowel: Popiner, Popeno, Popenough and it is still often pronounced that way. Two of James' daughters, married in 1867 and 1869, were listed as Popinoe. Eventually the middle e was dropped and James' name and that of his descendants is now spelled Popnoe. His middle name is also a matter of dispute. Some Basham family records call him James Marion, another says James Monrow, and Allan Don Davis says James William Popnoe Sr. Davis may have interpreted that from the 1900 census that listed James Sr. living with the family of his son, James William. Early censuses stated James Marion's birthplace as both Louisiana and Arkansas. On the back of his picture, in possession of Sue Rodgers, James' granddaughter wrote that he was born in Polk County, Louisiana. There is none such in Louisiana, but there is in Arkansas, which became a state after James was born. The Louisiana Territory was created in 1805 and became Missouri Territory in 1812. In 1810, what is now Polk County was still Indian Land. In 1819, the Arkansas Territory was created in the southern part of the Missouri Territory, encompassing what is now Arkansas and Oklahoma and with an uncertain southwestern border with Texas. In 1820 the Arkansas Territorial Legislature established three counties which shared parts of present Polk County: Clark, Hempstead and Miller. Sevier County was formed from the latter two in 1828 and Polk was formed from Sevier in 1844. The Polk County courthouse burned during the Civil War and again in 1883. Anyone researching the Popenoes in that area from 1816 or before to the 1830s will have an interesting time. According to a granddaughter, at one time James hauled freight by ox wagon from Jefferson, Texas to Dallas and later by horse wagon before there was a railroad. The freight was sent from New Orleans by river boats to Jefferson (near Shreveport), then freighted by wagon to other towns. The granddaughter said she had only seen her grandparents one time and that she remembered her grandmother's hair and eyes were black and she was very pretty. Mexican Texas became the Republic of Texas in 1836 and the following year James Popnoe moved to Jasper County (in east Texas bordering Louisiana) where he received a second class certificate for 640 acres. On 28 Sep 1841 he received an unconditional certificate (#471) for this land. In 1845 Texas became a U.S. state and in 1847-8 James married Susan Watts whose family were living in the same county. In November 1850, James and Susan and their first born, Lucrecia were listed in the first U.S. Census in Sabine County, just north of Jasper County. By 1860 the family had moved to Fannin County, more than 200 miles away in north Texas bordering Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. In 1866 James paid a Civil War tax on one carriage in Fannin County. Between 1870 and 1880 the family moved again to a ranch in Coleman County, more than 100 miles NW of Austin. The ranch was located near Robinson's Peak, about 9 miles NW of Coleman town. James brought in masons from east Texas to build a two story stone house with chimneys at both ends. After it was abandoned many years later it was struck by lightning and the stones were hauled off by local farmers for their own use. A Coleman County history shows a cattle brand, SU for Susan Popnoe, recorded in 1878. James appears to have conceived two children with a black mother. The 1870 census for Fannin County showed Maria Roberts, cook, aged 26, with two sons, George 4 and Sam 2. However, the 1880 census for Fannin County shows a mulatto Sam Popnoe living with his mother Maria Yarbrough, 40, who is married to Tom Yarbrough. In Grayson County is a young black George Popinaw, a farm laborer living with the family of B. P. Lain. The 1900 census shows both men again living with their mother, now Mariah Lane, 64. The censuses show her born in Tennessee and show the boys born in Texas, place of father's birth unknown. In 1900 they are listed as George Popenny, born June 1864, table waiter, and Sam Poppeny, born March 1867, laborer. In 1900, the censuses showed Susan Watts Popnoe still living in Coleman County, with her daughter Maggie Popnoe Straley, while James was living in Stonewall County, NW of Abilene, with his son James William Popnoe. |

The Watts family may have arrived in South Carolina in 1767 on the ship Earl of Hillsborough from Belfast Township, Northern Ireland. He obtained a land grant in Camden, South Carolina. Susan's mother, Susan Hutchins, was born in Georgia or Mississippi about 1789. Around 1815-17, Thomas Watts married in Ouachita Parish, LA, Susan Hutchins Pace Berry, a third marriage for her and a second marriage for him. In 1825, the Watts family moved to the Mexican Municipality of Bevil, now Jasper County, TX, near the town of Jasper, where Susan Watts was born. The Spanish Archives of the Texas General Land Office shows that Thomas Watts had 1 lea. of land there on 23 Dec 1834. A Mexican Census of Texas in 1835 shows Susan Watts, age six. Thomas died in 1841 and is buried on his land in what became known as the Watts-Fuller Cemetery. |

Cowsert patented 160 acres of land in Travis district, Coleman Co. In 1889 he patented 176 acres in Bexar and Milam Districts, Jones Co, patented another 480 acres there at an unspecified date; and 322.45 acres there on 16 Nov 1904. Viola Evaline Buck died on 14 April 1947 at Chaves, NM, at age 87.1
One of Viola's children, Johnie Parks, provided information on her descent. She was said to be related to General Joseph Warren, 1741-1775, an educator, physician, soldier and patriot leader in the pre-1776 period; an associate of Samuel and John Adams, John Hancock and others in Boston. He drafted the Suffolk Resolve which was sent to the Continental Congress and was President of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress in 1775. With war approaching he wished to serve as a soldier, not a doctor, and was appointed a Major General by the Continental Congress. On June 17, 1775 he fought and was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. As an important Revolutionary War hero, towns and counties in many states have been named after him. Elizabeth Warren, a daughter or neice of Joseph, married a Barber; they lived in Hagerstown, MD and Harpers Ferry. Their son Samuel Barber moved to Texas when he was 17 years old; he died in 1864 at Barber Hill, about 12 miles from Liberty, TX. He married Elizabeth Barrow, born in LA, 30 Dec 1790, died 7 Mar 1868 in Refugio, TX. The Barrow family were wealthy slave owners and allegedly bought Elizabeth from Indians when she was two. She was said to be French. Samuel Barber and Elizabeth Barrow had ten children; the last was Eliza Ann (b 17 Feb 1830 in Refugio, TX, d 4 July 1916, Coleman, TX). Eliza first married a man named Winfree who died after two years, then in Newton County, TX, 1851, she married Augustus Richard Buck who was b 1 August 1824 in Lowell, MA and spent his next 6 years in Boston. In 1830, Richard was kidnapped by a Prof. and Mrs. Page and taken to New Orleans and on to Anahuac, TX. After his marriage during the Civil War, Richard joined a companiy of Texas Confederates at Liberty and later moved to Refugio. He served as a tax collector, riding by horse from farm to farm. His horse slipped in a hole, threw him and rolled on him breaking some ribs. He lived a few months then died of TB 9 Dec 1876. Eliza then moved to Coleman with her three daughters.2 |

Will was probably born in Fannin County, moving with his family to Coleman County after 1870. While there he married Fannie Cope, daughter of Reuben and Rebecca Cope. Her sister, LaNora, married Will's brother, Charles. The Popnoes, Copes and Straleys were among the earliest settlers in Coleman County. It is said that when they arrived there was only a saloon and one store in Coleman town. During their life together, Will and Fannie lived in Coleman, Scurry, Stonewall and Borden Counties. Just before his death, Will patented 486 acres of land in Bexar District, Scurry Co. Both Will and Fannie are buried in the Snyder Cemetery, Snyder, Scurry County. |

Mary Magdaline (Maggie) Popnoe died on 20 April 1959 at the Davis Ranch, Lampasas, TX, at age 91.1
R Maggie grew up in Fannin and Coleman Counties near Robinsons Peak where the family owned a combination farm and ranch. In 1887 Maggie married Charles Straley from Lampasas County, brother of John Henry Straley who had married her sister Addie several years earlier. Charles was killed 28 May 1893 while herding cattle in Taylor County (adjoining Coleman). His horse ran into a drift fence and he died from the resulting injuries. Charles and Maggie had four children, though one, a son born in 1890, died when only 6 days old. So Maggie was left a widow with three children, all under five. Her sister, Addie, had died only 18 days previously, leaving John Henry Straley with five small children. It must have seemed a practical move to combine their families. Maggie married John the next year. Some time before 1900, Maggie's mother, Susan Watts Popnoe came to live with them, leaving her father living with her brother James William Popnoe in Stonewall County. Sometime after 1900, the family moved to Oplin in Callahan County, just north of Coleman. Maggie and John had three children together between 1897 and 1908. The Straley children were among the first children to attend school in the Oplin, Texas area. After John Straley died of heart failure in 1928, Maggie continued to live in the Straley home in Oplin for many years. Some of her children had settled in the area. In 1950 she found she had cancer and she began to spend her winters and then to live permanently with her youngest child, Myrtle Thelma Straley Davis in Lampasas County. She died in 1959 at the age of 91 and is buried next to her husband John in the Oplin Cemetery. |

Charles Cullen Popnoe died on 4 November 1927 at Coleman, TX, at age 58.1
R When Charles was born in 1870, he already had two married sisters, Lucrecia and Caroline, and two nieces, Susan Basham and Edna Cowsert. Before he was 10 he moved with his parents, two brothers and three sisters to Coleman County. Caroline and William Cowsert settled nearby, while Lucrecia and Frank Bassham remained in Fannin County. Charles married Nora Cope when he was 23 and she was 22. She was the sister of Fannie Cope who married Charles' older brother, James William Popnoe. Charles and Nora seem to have lived out their lives in Coleman, TX and both are buried there in the Silver Valley Cemetery. Their son Bonnie married Millie Gillaspy (1895-1985) who was born on a farm near Shenandoah, Iowa. In about 1895 her parents, Stephen F. and Dora (Turner) Gillaspy moved to a farm about two miles south of White Chapel and lived there three years before buying a stock farm south of Silvey Valley in Coleman County. It was here that Millie grew up with seven brothers and sisters. Bonnie and Millie had two sons, Barney and Gerald (Jake). Widowed early in her marriage, Millie raised her two sons on a farm near Novice. Barney and Jake still live in Coleman County where they have kept much of the Cope and Gillaspy land. Barney taught many years in Burkett and was a coach and teacher in the Talpa-Centennial Schools and other area schools before retiring after teaching 40 years. Jake was a trustee for the Novice School District. Bonnie and his wife, Millie are buried in Silver Valley Cemetery along with his parents, his brother Tom and Lucille W. Popnoe, Tom's wife.1 |
