Daniel Poppino, in his will of 25 Jan 1840, gave Herrick the use of a 1/4 acre in the forks of the road leading from his house to Florida with buildings on it, plus 1/5 of his real estate, with an equal amount going to Lima and Sophia and 2/5s to his grandson Daniel Underdonk. Executors were Daniel Underdonk and Amzi Armstrong. In 1845 after his death, the heirs brought suit to obtain a partition of the premises, 136 acres. The following year, 4 Apr. 1846. Herrick W. Poppino of Goshen for $1 sold to Amzi Jessup all his part of the premises of Daniel Poppino, deceased, which had recently been sold by order of the Court of Chancery, which part amounted to about $1277. And Amzi was to invest the money to support Herrick Poppino and his family and after his natural death to pay the balance to his heirs. The 1846 map shows Herrick Poppino at what is now the intersection of Clark Road and Fort Hill Road, and D. P. Underdonk a little farther north on Fort Hill Road. This is the location of Daniel Poppino's farm and house, now 34 Clark Street.1,2 Herrick W. Poppino married Catherine O'Dell. Herrick W. Luther was the son of Silas Stewart and Margaret Webb. After marrying Maria at the age of 21 they may have continued to live with his parents in Stewarttown near Ridgebury, north of Rutgers Creek in Minisink, Orange County, according to the 1810 census. Their son, Daniel Jackson Stewart later told of the hardships of that period. The winter of 1817-18 was so cold that all the crops were destroyed. Three inches of snow fell across southern New York in June and on the 4th of July snow fell as far south as Virginia. The crops were destroyed by frosts in May and the second sowings by the June snow. In August people had to wear the heaviest clothing. It was impossible to grow garden vegetables of any kind and although milk and butter were plentiful, people went for months without bread, subsisting on wild greens such as dandelions and on wild game, corn meal and potatoes. Luther and Maria and family were still in Minisink in 1825 where they had two horses, five sheep, three hogs, and two head of cattle. Ten years later they only had two hogs and one cow. Soon after, they moved to Owego in Tioga County where Maria died in 1839 after giving birth to 15 children. Most of the information on the Stewarts is from Ronald L. Stewart, 9909 Fostoria Road NE Albuquerque, NM 87111. His Stewart Genealogy was published in 2004.1 Luther Stewart was born on 2 December 1787 at Orange Co, NY. He married Maria Poppino, daughter of John Poppino and Anna Jackson, on 6 January 1809 at Goshen, Orange Co, NY. Luther Stewart died on 28 May 1867 at Pine Valley, Chemung Co, NY, at age 79. |

Daniel grew up in Orange County, moved to Buffalo in 1833 and bought a 60 acre farm in 1853 where he lived the rest of his life. In his youth he was a sailor for four years, later was in the fruit business in Buffalo. Believing he was descended from Anneke Jans and his family might therefore one day become rich from a suit against Trinity Church, Wall Street (which never happened and we know now that he wasn't descended from Anneke) when he was 86 he wrote a genealogy, based on family bibles and contact with relatives. He said that he had seen and visited his great grandfather Alexander Jackson and his wife Martha Drake who was the dau. of John Drake. "I was born in the town of Minisink, Orange County, New York, December 4, 1810 near the Drake family in Goshen and Chester and Florida all joining. I have also seen many of John Drake's great grandchildren and corresponded with them in various places. I have also visited most all of the Drake, Knapp, Jackson, Poppino and Higby heirs in many counties of the state of New York; corresponded with many of them in various states of the Union." The document was given to his son, Peter, in Buffalo, 1900. I have a typed copy.1 Daniel Jackson Stewart was born on 4 December 1810 at Minisink, Orange Co, NY. | Joseph probably went out to Clermont Co, Ohio with his brother Isaac and sister Ann Eliza. It could have been as early as 1817, with his father, or later with his mother, but prior to 1834 when Ann Eliza was married there. He was probably living there as late as 1842 when his first son was born, although he was married in Franklin Co, IN, just over the border, a short journey of a day or two. The obituary of his son Alexander said he was born in Rush County which is NW of Franklin. In 1864 he enlisted in the army in Greensburg, Decatur County, just south of Rush. After the war, most of his family was in Boone County, just NW of Indianapolis and he was probably with them, although he doesn't show up in any census records. In 1872 he was living in Carmel, Hamilton Co, IN, north of Indianapolis. He may have separated from his wife because on 8 Dec. 1879, Smith M. White and Martha White, his wife, sold to Emeline Poppino for $200, Lot 52 in Cross 4th addition to the town of Zionsville (Boone Co Deedbook 31, p507). Hattie Poppino said he was living in Zionsville in 1879, though I don't see why a deed would go to his wife and not both of them. On 11 Mar 1889, after Joseph had died, Emeline Poppino (unmarried) sold the property for $200 to Ida N. White (Book 49, p 27). Joseph A. Poppino was born on 8 February 1816 at NY. According to her marriage application (per records in County Clerk's office, Franklin County, IN, filed 14 Oct 1839) her father was William Simpson and her mother was a Clark, both born in New Jersey. In Warwick, John and Samuel Simpson were both in the 1775 tax list, living in District 2, on the west side running down to Amity. This was where various Poppino relatives lived. John, Peter and Samuel Simpson served in Col. Hathorn's regiment during the War. There are a couple of DAR registrations, #138294 and 105638 that trace ancestry to John Simpson 1758-1812 through his son Ira Simpson (1804-53). William Simpson could have been another son but I have seen no evidence. There were also Clarks in the neighborhood and across the line in Sussex Co, NJ.. The family bible says that Emeline was born 19 January 1824 and married October 6, 1839, which would make her 15. Since she was born in Ohio, her family obviously had moved there before 1824. The bible also mentions John Simpson, b 8 Jan 1821--probably a brother. In her old age, Emaline lived with her son Alexander in Oregon.1,2 Emeline Simpson was born on 19 January 1824. From an old scrapbook belonging to Mrs. James T. Armstrong of Florida, "The progenitor of the Armstrong family in Orange County was Francis Armstrong. He was born in Ulster County, Ireland in 1695 and married Miss Deborah Latimore, Feb 1, 1721. The couple, with their first born son, William, in arms, came to this country in 1723. It was on August 6th, 1723, the family vacated the old home in Farmaragh, facing westward 'to Amaricah!'. On September 11 they 'left Londonderry Loch and sailed on the main - November ye 28 saw land but did not land till ye 10 of December following in New York.'" Charles M. Vail in his genealogical memoirs says the family was Scotch. During Cromwell's persecutions many Scotch went to the north of Ireland. Between 1718 and 1730 several thousand of these men, women and children left Ulster and came to the United States. This, says Vail, had a marked effect on the vital force of the United States, which drew some of its best blood from the Presbyterians of the north of Ireland. After being in New York and Jamaica, Long Island, Francis and his family arrived in Orange County about 1729. Francis' first wife died ca 1760 in Warwick and in 1762 he married Mary or Martha Ayers, widow of Rev. Enos Ayres, first pastor the church of Blooming Grove in Orange County. She was esteemed to be remarkably pious. Francis bought land along the Florida-Edenville Road, which was known as Armstrong Street until well into the 20th century. The property adjoined lands of William Carr and John Poppino. Francis and Deborah had seven sons and three daughters and there were, as might be expected, many intermarriages among them and their descendants and other Poppino descendants. Son William, 27 Oct 1722-11 March 1805, married Mary Carr about 1750, probably the daughter of George Carr and sister of William Carr who married Catherine Poppino. His obituary said: "Through the whole of his life he bore an exceptional character; was esteemed by all who knew him, and his death was universally regretted. William Armstrong, Jr., his first son, in marrying Sarah Johnson, was marrying his first cousin once removed, since Sarah and Catherine Poppino were sisters. In 1774, William Armstrong deeded to William Armstrong, Jr. 196 acres, part of the tract of 608 he purchased in 1773 along the north side of the road leading from David Carr to Florida. Witnesses were Robert Armstrong (a son) and George Kerr. Later, parts of this land on the west side of the highway were sold by William Jrs' heirs Thomas Armstrong and Jeffrey Wisner, to Rennsalaer and Jasper Armstrong, who will be discussed below. William Jr. received land bounty rights for service with the 4th Regiment of the Orange County militia. This means that he was ready to serve; not that he necessarily saw active service. In 1789 when the town of Warwick was established, he was made Road Master, along with Richard Johnson and many others. He contributed to the Florida Presbyterian Church land fund in 1793. In 1805 he was executor of his father's will.2,3,4,5,6,7 William Armstrong Jr. married Sarah Johnson, daughter of Richard Johnson and Sarah Poppino.1 William Armstrong Jr. was born in 1751 at Florida, Orange, NY.1 He died on 12 February 1811 at Florida, Orange, NY.1 |

James was said to be born in Belfast, Ireland. In 1775 he was one of the signers of the Pledge of Association, one of the first steps in the Revolution. At the time he was one of the poorest men in Florida, with property assessed at only 6 shillings. He served as a private in Captain Richard Bailey's company, 4th Regiment, Orange County Militia. In 1793 he contributed to the Florida Presbyterian Church land fund. In 1800 he witnessed the will of Joseph Totten, married to Mary Poppino. The 1790 census shows 4 females aside from his wife, so there doubtless were daughters not recognized here. On 20 Mar 1779, James and Christian Aspell mortgaged for £1000, 100 acres formerly conveyed to John Poppino. In 1781, John Poppino's heirs sold to James Aspell, 105 1/2 acres surrounded by the lands of Thomas Jackson, Joseph Totten, James Benjamin and William Carr. It sounds as though Poppino had sold half his land to Aspell earlier, no deed surviving. On 21 Nov 1810, James Aspell Sr. sold the land for $5125 to his grandson, Christopher Aspell, Jr., now surrounded by the lands of David Lawrence, William Roe, Joseph Totten deceased, Thomas Brown, William Carr and Enoch Jackson. When James Aspell died the inventory of his estate, filed 23 Aug 1826, included a Latin dictionary and two volumes of Virgil, suggesting that he was an educated man. Notes due him included one from James Aspell, Jr. and $2,312 still outstanding on the 1810 bond from Christopher Aspell.1,2,3,4,5,6 James Aspell was born in 1745. He married Christian Johnson, daughter of Richard Johnson and Sarah Poppino, before 1781; John Poppino's home farm was sold by his heirs to James Aspell in 1781, so logically he and Christian Johnson would be married by that time. In the 1790 Census, William was shown with 2 males over 16 and 6 females. In the 1800 Census there were 2 boys and 4 girls. I have identified one boy but only two of his possibly six girls. In 1790 he bought from John Alyese [Alyea], 49 and 2/4 acres, adjoining lands of John Alyea the elder and William Armstrong. The sale included a back piece adjoining John Alyea the elder on the road that led from the house of Richard Johnson, which he purchased from William Armstrong, to the house of Peter Alyea. Describing the neighborhood in 1805, Henry Pelton [a relative] wrote in 1872: "we take the west road to Florida [West Ridge Road], the first house belonged to the heirs of Abraham Dolson, deceased. And now we turn west towards the Armstrong settlements, and in the first house we find William Johnson, a little way back from the road. Next was the place of Isaac Dolson....Then there was Richard Johnson and further on Samuel Johnson, where John Vandevoort now lives. Then over the hill, farther west, was Wm. Armstrong, where the late Rensslaer J. Armstrong [both relatives] died." In 1795, William and Catherine sold to Richard Johnson for £310, 68+ acres, witnessed by Samuel Johnson and William Armstrong, Jr. This may be part of his father's farm which had been willed to Samuel. In 1802 he was witness to the will of his neighbor, Abraham Dolson, and in 1823 to the will of Benjamin Barney of Warwick. In 1804, William (or the other William, perhaps his son) was one of a group of men who tried to start an Episcopal Church in Warwick, though the attempt was not successful. By 1825, he and Catherine were apparently living with their son, Samuel, who appeared to have two boys, two girls and a wife. The State census showed one male 18-45 but two male voters. They were living on 75 acres and had a highly productive farm. He wrote his will in 1832 and it was probated 20 February that year. In it he left his personal property to his widow, Catherine along with the use and occupation of his farm during her natural life, excepting the northwest room of the house on the second floor which was for the use of his son Samuel and his children, on condition that Catherine would amply maintain, support and educate Samuel's children. It would seem from this that Samuel was physcially or mentally handicapped. In the event that Catherine neglected or refused to comply with these conditions, the property was to be sold and the proceeds divided in thirds to his daughter Christian, wife of Lewis Mapes, daughter Harriet, wife of Daniel Conkling, and Samuel's children. If Samuel from sickness or other causes were to become unable to support himself, then the Executors could give him such assistance as they thought proper. His executors were Edward S. Welling and his nephew, Henry Johnson. In the 1850 census, Catherine, 84, was still living with Samuel, 53, and two of his children, John 25 and Julia A, 28.2,3,4,5 William Johnson married Catherine Jayne; Catherine was one of 12 children of Samuel Jayne, Jr. and Lydia Skaden. She was married first to Benjamin Shepherd, 2nd to William Johnson. The Rogers family came from Huntington, Long Island, where they were connected by marriage with the Platt, Sammis and Whitman families, all of whom were represented in the Goshen/Warwick area. In his will, 21 Dec 1774, Ananias Rogers of Huntington, named his sons Augustus and Platt, and daughter Mary Sackett. He mentioned a lot he had purchased from Nathanel Sackett in Warwick Precinct. Our Ananias was the son of Augustus who died in 1786; his wife Lavina and Ananias were the administrators; Richard Johnson was bondsman. Ananias served as a private in Capt Minthorn's company, Col. Hathorn's 4th Regiment of the Orange County Militia, for which he received land bounty rights. He and Mary lived at the corner of what are now Locust Street and Maple Ave (Route 17A) at the north end of Warwick Villege, about a mile below where the three Johnson brothers lived. The 1799 tax list shows him with a house and farm valued at $1755, with personal goods valued $171. The 1800 census shows him with 2 males under 10, 2, 10-16, and 2, 16-26; also 2 females under 10. In 1804 he was a trustee (along with Richard Johnson) of the Presbyterian Church of Warwick and as such signed an agreement to pay the minister a salary of $150 a year. Before his death in 1806 he sold the property to Sylvanus Fancher from CT; it is not clear where the family moved. Ananias died intestate; administration was granted to Mary, his widow, along with Richard Johnson and Joseph Miller.1,2,3,4,5,6,7 Ananias Rogers was born in 1760. Samuel does not appear in the 1790 census; he was probably living with his father. After inheriting his father's farm, in 1799 he was taxed for real property of $1000 and personal property of $114. In the 1800 Census he was shown with 1 male under 10, 2 26-45, 1 female under 10, 1 26-45 and 1 over 45. We can presume he was married with two small children and his mother, Sarah, was living with them. We don't know who the other adult male was. In 1810, he had 2 boys under 10 and 1 10-16, one girl under 10 and 1 10-16; The older woman is still there but the other adult male is not. In the 1820 Census we have 2 males under 10, 1 10-16, 1 16-18, 2 16-26, and 1 over 45, presumably Samuel. There are 2 females under 10, 1 10-16, 2 16-26 and 1 45 and over, presumably his wife. This is a lot of people; they may not all be his own family. In 1794, Samuel witnessed the will of John Wood, Jr. a neighbor who was Elizabeth Wood Poppino's nephew and therefore a cousin to Samuel. On 23 Feb 1803, Samuel, his brothers Richard and William, Ananias Rogers, Joseph Totten and other Presbyterians, many related, who lived closer to Warwick than Florida, petitioned the quite similar Reformed Dutch Church to take them under its care and establish a church in Warwick, This was done in 1804 and the families continued with it for the next hundred years or more. A possible daughter was Mary Johnson who was married to Mr. Israel Seward 13 Apr 1822 by Rev. Cummins, all of Florida.1,2,3,4,5,6,7 Samuel Johnson married Sarah Jackson, daughter of James Jackson and Mary Poppino. Samuel Johnson was born before 1774; Was listed as 26 or older in 1800 Census. He was the son of Richard Johnson and Sarah Poppino. Samuel Johnson died after 1830; Listed in the 1830 census. |
