Generation One

 

1.  Sylvester Newton POPPINO  was born on 27 Apr 1858 at Johnson Co. IN.  He married Luella Abercrombie  (12 Nov 1863-14 Oct 1898) on 9 Jul 1882 in a Methodist Church at New Lebanon, IN.1+  He married Metha (Mattie) Christiana Reemts on 6 Dec 1899 at Winfield, Cowley Co. KS.  He died on 7 Feb 1942 and is buried at Graceland Park Cemetery, 4723 South 42nd Street, Omaha, Douglas Co. NE 68107.16  Luella Abercrombie was born 12 Nov 1863 in Illinois and died 14 Oct 1898.  Mattie was born 19 May 1872 in Aurich, Germany [ Her mother’s name also was Metha ] & died 14 Jun 194816 in Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.  Sylvester Newton was the seventh [7th] generation from Jean Papineau, Niort, France.

                  2.       i.    Harry Franklin  was born on 14 Oct 1883 at Osawatomie, Miami Co. KS.  He married Ruth Hazel Miller on 1 May 1927 at Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.  Ruth was born 18 Feb 1907 and died 17 Mar 194416   He married Mae Stewart after 1944.

                  3.      ii.    Clara  was born circa 1885.  She died circa 1887.

                  4.      iii.    Eva Mable was born on 26 Mar 1888 at Somerset, KS.  She married George Trader (a horse trader)13 on 22 Sep 1908 at Hominy, Osage Co. OK.  She and George Trader were divorced on 9 Mar 1917 at Omaha.  Her maiden name was restored.  She died 15 Jul 197916 at age 91.2+

                  5.     iv.    Allen G. was born on 6 Nov 1892 at New Lebanon, IN.  He married Margaret Eye on 15 Nov 1922 at Nowata, Nowata Co. OK.  Margaret was born 21 Aug 1897 and died 6 Apr 1994.17

                  6.      v.    Walter H. was born on 21 May 1894 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co. OK.  He married Nellie Amanda Hall on 24 May 1914 at Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.  He married Stella Johnson on 12 Dec 1966 at Hartville, Wright Co. MO.  He died 13 Jan 199216 at age 97.13

                 7.      vi.    Cecil was born on 23 Feb 1896 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co. OK.  Adopted in infancy by Benjamin Newkirk, Cecil Poppino Newkirk married May Cooley on 25 Dec 1921 at Oklahoma City, OK.  Later divorced, he remarried.

                  8.       i.    Carl Albert was born on 18 Nov 1900 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co, OK.  He married Suzanne Robertson on 8 Aug 1933 at Cristobal, Canal Zone.

                  9.      ii.    Blanche May was born on 10 Aug 1902 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co. OK.  She married Ruel R. Gould on 20 Jul 1920 at Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.  She married Kenneth Shutts in 1945.

                10.      iii.    Gladys Alice was born on 3 Feb 1906 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co. OK.  Usually called Alice, she married James B. Anania on 24 Mar 1923 at Denison, IA.  She married Leo Mangel on 2 Apr 1928 at Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.  She married William Ward on 24 Aug 1942 at Papilion, Sarpy Co. NB.  She married George Trinies  on 8 Dec 1966 at Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.

                11.     iv.    John Lloyd was born on 11 Dec 1910 at Bellwood, NE.  He married Helen Barnbrook on 7 Jun 1929.  They were divorced in 1957.

                12.      v.    George Woodrow was born on 13 Jan 1913 at Bellwood, NE.  He married Gertrude Evelyn Beauchamp on 30 Dec 1939 at Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.

Generation Two

 

2.  Harry Franklin POPPINO (Sylvester1) was born on 14 Oct 1883 at Osawatomie, Miami Co, KS.  He married Ruth Hazel Miller on 1 May 1927 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  Ruth was born 18 Feb 1907 and died 17 Mar 1944.16     He married Mae Stewart after 1944; she died 22 May 1978.17  He died in Feb 197517 at 91.

                13.       i.    Harold Faye was born on 4 Jun 1928.  He married Marjorie Teague (who was born 15 Mar 1933 and died 7 Aug 1994 - interred at Graceland Park Cemetery16).

                14.      ii.    Jean Doris was born on 15 May 1930.  She married Harry E. Mahr (born 18 Aug 1932).

                15.      iii.    Eleanor Ruth was born on 25 Dec 1932 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  She died circa 1995.16

                16.      iv.    RONALD H. was born on 4 Jun 1934.  He married Winona Swalwell (who was born 8 Apr 1941).

                17.      v.    MAXINE J. was born on 3 Sep 1936.  She married Paul W. Novak (who was born 22 Aug 1930).

                18.      vi.    Elaine was born on 29 Apr 1939.  She married Robert P. Goldsberry (was born 25 Sep 1936)

                19.      vii.   Gloria Ann was born on 8 Dec 1942.  She was adopted in 1944 when her mother died.   She married Don Taber on 20 Apr 1968.

     There were no children of Harry Franklin Poppino and Mae Stewart

 

5.  Allen G. POPPINO (Sylvester1) was born on 6 Nov 1892 at New Lebanon, IN.  He married Margaret Eye (21 Aug 1897-6 Apr 1994) on 15 Nov 1922 at Nowata, Nowata Co, OK.  He died on 1 Mar 1980 at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Co, OK, at age 87.

                20.       i.    Allen Gerald was born on 30 Oct 1925 at Wichita, Sedgwick Co. KS.  He married Bernice Tobey on 13 Apr 1946 at Sanford, York Co, ME.  Married Barbara L. Thompson (Dec 1935-        ) on 22 May 1993.

6.  Walter H. POPPINO (Sylvester1) was born on 21 May 1894 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co, OK.16  He married Nellie Amanda Hall on 24 May 1914 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  He married Stella Johnson on 12 Dec 1966 at Hartville, Wright Co, MO.  He died on 13 Jan 199213 at age 97.

                21.       i.    Louella was born on 8 Mar 1915 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  She married Andrew Van Cleve on 14 May 1939 at Plattsmouth, Cass Co, NE.

                22.      ii.    Cecil Ray was born on 27 Feb 1918.  He died as an infant4+ on 10 Dec 1920.16

     There were no children of Walter H. Poppino and Stella Johnson

 

7.   Cecil POPPINO NEWKIRK (Sylvester 1) was born on 23 Feb 1896 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co. OK.  Adopted in infancy by Benjamin Newkirk, Cecil Poppino Newkirk married May Cooley on 25 Dec 1921 at Oklahoma City, OK.

                23.     i.      Benjamin Aubrey was born on 4 Nov 1922 at Oklahoma City, OK.

                24.    ii.      Margaret Elizabeth was born on 11 Oct 1923.   Married Carter Sparger.   No children.

                25.   iii.      EVE Blanche  was born on 16 Oct 1924.   Married William Young.

                26.   iv.      Cecil Poppino Newkirk, Jr. was born on 2 Aug 1931.   Married Beth.

 

8.  Carl Albert POPPINO (Sylvester1) was born on 18 Nov 1900 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co, OK.  He married Suzanne Robertson on 8 Aug 1933 at Cristobal, Canal Zone.  He died on 22 Aug 198323 at Tucson, AZ, at age 82. She was born on 20 Oct 1906 in Kansas City, MO.  She died on 1 Jul 197623 in the Phoenix Area, at age 69.  Records of both are at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 602 N. Wilmot Road, Tucson, AZ 85711.

      Carl earned a BS in EE at the University of Kansas in 1926.  At that time he began employment by the General Electric Company as a sales engineer and manager of sales offices in New York, South America, Minnesota, California and Arizona until retirement in 1959.  He then earned the degrees of BA and MA in sociology at Arizona State University in 1965 and 1967.  He was also an officer in Ordnance in the US Army Reserve from 1927 to 1930.

     Carl, in collaboration with Paul Bowman Popenoe, put together the first genealogy of the Popenoe/Poppino families 1969/1973, on which much of the material herein about the Poppino line is based.

                27.       i.    William Robert was born on 7 Jul 1934.  He married Kathryn Ann Berry on 27 Jun 1964 at Media, Delaware Co, PA.  Kathryn was born 24 Mar 1943 at Santa Monica, CA.

                28.      ii.    Marilyn Jane was born on 13 Nov 1935.  She married Woodward Jackson Payne on 29 Sep 1958 at Phoenix, Maricopa Co, AZ.  He was born 17 Apr 1935 at Phoenix, AZ.  She and Woody were divorced in Feb 1972 at Phoenix, AZ.  She married James Jeremiah McKee on 30 Dec 1983 at Manhattan Beach, CA.  She and Jim McKee were divorced in Nov 1991 at Tucson, AZ.

9.  Blanche May POPPINO (Sylvester1) was born on 10 Aug 1902 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co, OK.  She married Ruel R. Gould on 20 Jul 1920 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  She married Kenneth Shutts in 1945.  She died on 5 Nov 1987 at age 85.16  She was buried as Ashes at Graceland Park Cemetery, Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.4+

     Children of Blanche May Poppino and Ruel R. Gould both born at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE:

                29.       i.    Walter Ruel was born on 18 Feb 1924.  He disappeared.4+

                30.       ii.    William Allen was born on 29 Apr 1925.  He died on 10 Jan 2007 at Omaha, Douglas, NE.    (His ashes were scattered over the Norfolk Naval Base – a Navy man) at age 81.4+

     There were no children of Blanche May Poppino and Kenneth Shutts.4+ 

 

10.  Gladys Alice POPPINO (Sylvester1) was born on 3 Feb 1906 at Edmond, Oklahoma Co, OK.  She married James B. Anania on 24 Mar 1923 at Denison, IA.  Later divorced.  She married Leo Mangel on 2 Apr 1928 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  Leo was born on 21 Nov 1897.  Later divorced.  Leo died 30 Jul 1973 in San Francisco.  She married William Ward on 24 Aug 1942 at Papilion, Sarpy Co, NE.  He died 8 Dec 195116.  She married George Trinies on 8 Dec 1966 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  He died in 197816.  She died on 16 Mar 197116 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE, at age 65.

     As noted below, on 25 Oct 1944, the Wards adopted Gloria Ann Poppino, daughter of Harry Franklin Poppino, and her name was changed to Ward.

                32.       i.    ALYCE Joan was born on 18 Nov 1928.  She married Sam Thomas Spoto on 19 Sep 1953 at Omaha, NE.  Sam was born on 16 Jul 1927 in Council Bluffs, IA – late in life, stricken with ALS.

                33.      ii.    Phyllis Jean was born on 18 Nov 1928.  She died on 15 Feb 1929 at Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.

     There were no children of Gladys Alice Poppino and William Ward or George Trinies.  

 

11.  John Lloyd POPPINO (Sylvester1) was born on 11 Dec 1910 at Bellwood, NB.  He married Helen Barnbrook (21 Oct 1910-16 Dec 1996) on 7 Jun 1929.  They divorced in 1957.  He died on 8 Oct 1973 at San Dimas, Los Angeles, CA18, at age 62.5+

                34.       i.    John (Jackie) Lee3 (2 Feb 1931-3 May 1990), married Shirley Ruble. (        -2004) He and Shirley Ruble were divorced in 1972.  He married Judy Elaine Valentine (1949-       ) in 1972.

                35.      ii.    George (Buddy) Edward3 was born on 12 May 1933. He married Shar-Lynn at  Santa Barbara, CA.  He married a Darlene.

                36.      iii.    James (Jim) Charles (7 Dec 1935-27 Mar 1992) was born (twin) on 7 Dec 1935.  He married JoAnne Siedlik at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE,  Then sequentially he married Sarah, Patty and finally Donna Marie Mason, b 19 Apr 1953..

                37.     iv.    Jerold (Jerry) Ray was born (twin) on 7 Dec 1935, now deceased.  He married Arlys Schaefer at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  They were divorced in Sep 1968.  He married Dena Hoyt in 1968.  He married Judy ---.

 

12.  George Woodrow POPPINO (Sylvester1) was born on 13 Jan 1913 at Bellwood, NE.  He married Gertrude Evelyn Beauchamp on 30 Dec 1939 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  She was born on 19 Jul 1913 in South Omaha, Sarpy Co, NE. and died on 9 Jun 1999 of Alzheimer’s at Omaha, NE.  She is interred at Graceland Park.16 

     Children of George Woodrow Poppino and Gertrude Beauchamp, both born at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE:

                38.       i.    Sarah Ann (Sally) was born on 5 May 1942.  She married Dr. Richard Lawrence Smith on 5 Sep 1964 at Austin, Travis Co, TX.  Marriage dissolved 1972.  Married Stephen Michael Sturgeon on 17 Aug 1976 on Lake Shelbyville, Illinois – now living 9 miles east of Yaak, MT and is known as Sally Sturgeon.  Dr. Smith was born 14 Mar 1939 in Los Angeles, CA.  Steve Sturgeon was born on 22 Jan 1945 at Mattoon, Illinois.26

                39.      ii.    Mary Alice was born on 22 Oct 1944.  Married Dr. Vincent Orlando 19 Jun 1982 at Denver CO.  Divorced by June 1995.  Vince Orlando was born in Mayfield, PA. Mary is now living in Thornton, Colorado.26

16.  Ronald H. POPPINO (Harry2, Sylvester1) was born on 4 Jun 1934.  He married Winona Swalwell on 13 May 1959.

                53.       ii.    Richard (Rick) A. was born on 6 Mar 1962.

17.  Maxine June POPPINO (Harry2, Sylvester1) was born on 3 Sep 1936.  She married Paul W. Novak b. 22 Aug 1930.  Paul died 12 Oct 1988 and was buried at Graceland Park Cemetery.16

18.  Elaine POPPINO (Harry2, Sylvester1) was born on 29 Apr 1939.  She married Robert P. Goldsberry on 19 Sept 1965.  Robert died 4 Aug 1993.20 (25 Sep 1936- 4 Aug 1993)

19.  Gloria Ann WARD (Harry2 Poppino, Sylvester1), born on 8 Dec 1942.  On October 25, 1944, Gloria Ann was adopted by her aunt, Gladys Alice Poppino Ward - when her mother died..  Under Nebraska law, after six months her old birth certificate was destroyed and a new one issued for Gloria Ann Ward - as though she was born to the Wards.  She married Don Taber on 20 Apr 1968.

                63.       i.    Philip Taber was born on 26 Feb 1973.

                64.      ii.    Dawn Noel TABER was born on 25 May 1969.  She married John Gencarelli.  They live in Omaha NE.

 

20.  Allen Gerald POPPINO (Allen2, Sylvester1) was born on 30 Oct 1925 at Wichita, Sedgwick Co, KS.  He married Bernice Tobey  on 13 Apr 1946 at Sanford, York Co, ME.  He and Bernice Tobey were divorced in Apr 1981. He married Barbara L. Thompson (Dec 1935-        ) on 22 May 1993.7+

                65.       i.    Robert Allen was born on 19 May 1947 at Stillwater, Payne Co, OK.  He married Shannon Ruth Rose  (19 Oct 1955-        ) on 17 Jan 1986.

     There were no children of Allen Gerald Poppino and Barbara L. Thompson.7+

 

21.  Louella POPPINO (Walter2, Sylvester1) was born on 8 Mar 1915 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NB.  She married Andrew Van Cleve on 14 May 1939 at Plattsmouth, Cass Co, NB.

28.  Marilyn Jane POPPINO (Carl2, Sylvester1) was born on 13 Nov 1935 at Schenectady, Schenectady Co, NY.  She married Woodward Jackson Payne (17 Apr 1935-        )" on 29 Sep 1958 at Phoenix, Maricopa Co, AZ.3  She and Woodward (Woody) Jackson Payne were divorced in Feb 1972 at Phoenix, AZ.  She married James Jeremiah McKee on 30 Dec 1983 at Manhattan Beach, CA.3+  She and James Jeremiah McKee were divorced in Nov 1991 at Tucson, AZ.26

                72.      ii.    Sarah Nicole was born on 16 May 1969.  She married Sam Logan Houston from Merced, CA  in Feb 1993 at Tucson, AZ.  She and Sam Logan Houston were divorced in 1996.

     There were no children of Marilyn Jane Poppino and James Jeremiah McKee.

 

32.  ALYCE JOAN MANGEL (Gladys Alice2, Sylvester1) was born on 18 Nov 1928 at Omaha, Douglas Co. NE.  She married Samuel Thomas Spoto on 19 Sep 1953 at Council Bluffs, IA.  Sam was born on 16 Jul 1927 at Council Bluffs, IA – late in life stricken with ALS.6+

34.  John (Jackie) Lee POPPINO (John2, Sylvester1) was born on 2 Feb 1931 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.  He married Shirley Ruble(        -2004)  He and Shirley Ruble were divorced in 1972.  He married Judy Elaine Valentine (1949-        )  in 1972.  He died on 3 May 1990 at Hesperia, CA, at age 59.5

36.   James (Jim) Charles POPPINO (John2, Sylvester1) was born on 7 Dec 1935 at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE.2  He married JoAnn Siedlik at Omaha, Douglas Co, NE; James had three more wives after Joanne: Sarah, Patty and Donna.  James died on 27 Mar 1992 at Upland, San Bernardino, CA, age 56.5+
